Forest School

Our Forest School

Every 3 and 4 year old child at Ashgate Nursery School has the opportunity to attend 5 of our Forest School sessions and thoroughly enjoy their experience.  We travel in small groups by minibus to the woods at Broomfield College where the children experience the woodland environment and a range of activities beyond the nursery walls.  The sessions are led by Sarah Leivers our fully qualified Forest School leader and parents are welcomed and encouraged to join us.

The forest school movement started in Scandinavia where children spent a significant amount of time in the outdoors. They recognised the value of this experience and many others in other countries adopted the approach.

The Forest School Association describes Forest School as

“an inspirational process that offers all learners regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self esteem through hands on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment with trees…This ethos creates learning communities where deep level learning and progression are the norm.”

Our experience tells us that children often develop confidence outside the confines of the classroom walls which supports their learning back in the nursery. Their language, imagination and understanding of the natural world are all enhanced and their relationship with the environment is made real.
